Karelia is a Place of Breath-Taking Natural Phenomena

3This year the international students studying at PetrSU were really lucky to see with their own eyes and together with all Petrozavodsk and Karelia citizens two great natural phenomena – the aurora borealis and the solar eclipse.
The first one could be seen in Karelia, which is quite rare, in the beginning of January and then again in the middle of March. The sky above the town was full of vivid colours which could be seen nearly from any Petrozavodsk window.
The solar eclipse took place on the 20th of March. In Petrozavodsk the Sun was closed by the Moon for 73.33%. PetrSU astronomic club “Asterion” arranged the observation near the main university campus in the centre of the town. Anyone could join the observation and was provided with telescopes, binocular glasses and darkened-lens goggles. Our students used some old floppies to look at the Sun, got unforgettable impressions and even took several pictures of the eclipse themselves.
Those who didn’t manage to get outside during the eclipse because of the classes, watched it online via university TV broadcasting service during breaks and from PetrSU International Office window.
