On the 3rd of March the International Winter School “Social Politics and Human Rights” was opened at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences of Petrozavodsk State University. The school is held in the framework of the Barents Cross Boarder University on the “Comparative Social Work” program. The partners of the program are the University of Lapland (Rovaniemi, Finland), Northern Arctic Federal University (Arkhangelsk) and Murmansk State Humanities University.
The opening speech was made by Iuliia Petrovskaya, the acting dean of the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, and professor Tarja Orjasniemi, the master’s program coordinator of the University of Lapland. The participants of the school are students from different countries (Finland, Switzerland, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, etc.) and professors of the partner universities.
Lectures, practical trainings and seminars on social politics problems were held in English. In the framework of the school the following themes were discussed: human rights in Russia and the peculiarities of the social politics of Russia, Finland and the European Union.
Visiting Petrozavodsk social institutions - such municipal institutions as “Rodnik” treatment center for physically disabled children and teenagers” and “Preodoleniie” social integration center for the citizens of no fixed abode” - served as practical trainings. The Russian and Finnish students had an opportunity to explicitly ask questions to officers and find out which difficulties they face while working with targeted population categories.
Dmitrii Lyabegin, the associate director of “Preodoleniie” center, as well the professor of the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences of PetrSU, told the winter school participants about the work of the center, its professional staff structure, the main problems of social work with the citizens who use the services of “Preodoleniie” center. In such a manner the participants of the International Winter School “Social Politics and Human Rights” got their first overview of the Russian social sphere.
To summarize the results the students presented their own projects on the school themes and defended them in English.
