Winter Students International Training Camp in Competitive Programming in PetrSU

From 27.01.2014 to 06.02.2014, the winter trainings of the strongest student teams were held in Petrozavodsk State University in order to prepare for the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest. There were 49 teams (170 participants) taking part in this event from 32 universities of 9 countries: Russia, Belarus, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Poland, Slovakia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The trainings have been held since 1998 twice a year, in winter and summer.
Within the winter training camp there is a tradition to hold Open International Competition for the Cup of the Head of the Republic of Karelia in Collegiate Programming among students which has become a kind of primary election for the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest. Since 2004, the winners of the Cup have become the world champions and prize-winners for many times. The training camp in programming held in Karelia is considered to be one of the most prestigious. The success and achievements of the Karelian programmers are often earn honorary mention at the competitions of the highest rank. On the basis of Petrozavodsk State University the strongest young programmers regularly top their skills before the upcoming world championships.
The funds for the prize giving are provided by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Karelia, as well as the long-term sponsors of the competition - the companies "Yandex" and «Google».
The winner was Gennady Korotkevich (St. Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics). Gennady Korotkevich became the winner of the Cup of the Head of Karelia, too: "The trainings at Petrozavodsk State University are a great experience, a great opportunity to meet people from other countries and communicate with them. This year I am the only member of the team. The tasks are always interesting. The rivals are always strong. It’s stability in the good sense. I feel quite confident. I have decided to take part in the competition being alone in the team, as the guys who I participated with before do not participate in trainings this time, and I have not formed my own team yet. So this year I am going to miss the Contest, but I am still training."
One of the prizes was won by the Polish team from Warsaw University.
The rector of PetrSU A.V. Voronin congratulated all the participants with the victory: "Today there are a lot of students who came to PetrSU for the first time, and those who have come to the training camp for many times already. I hope this event has brought benefits to each of you. I am absolutely sure that the future world champion is among you today. On behalf of the organizers and the staff of Petrozavodsk State University I wish the teams to perform successfully in the World Cup finals, come home with medals and prize-winning places."
The Minister of Education of the Republic of Karelia A.N. Morozov said: "The Open International Cup of the Head of the Republic of Karelia competitions facilitate positioning Karelia as the leading region of the Russian Federation in the development of information technologies and the support of young intellectuals. We are proud to be the organizer of many past and present training camps. Petrozavodsk State University, for sure, is one of the best universities in Russia."
