Petrozavodsk and Russia through the Eyes of the International Student
DanielDaniel Becker, the student of the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Göttingen (Germany), explains his interest in the Russian politics: "Russia is one of the leading world powers, so I'm curious to compare how the ongoing here events are reflected in the Russian and Western media". Among the Russian politicians Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who, according to the student, "gives the impression of a concentrated, inspiring, calm and confident person" appeals to Daniel. From the autumn semester Daniel was studying on the exchange program at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences of our university. He sought to come to Russia not only to study, but also to dispel stereotypes about our country.

International Winter School On the 3rd of March the International Winter School “Social Politics and Human Rights” was opened at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences of Petrozavodsk State University. The school is held in the framework of the Barents Cross Boarder University on the “Comparative Social Work” program. The partners of the program are the University of Lapland (Rovaniemi, Finland), Northern Arctic Federal University (Arkhangelsk) and Murmansk State Humanities University.




"Kalevala" Day a Lesson in the Museum
Kalevala DayThe 28th of February is “Kalevala Day” that is celebrated in Karelia and neighboring Finland. The first complete edition of “Kalevala” was released 165 years ago. Our international students took part in this cultural event. It is impossible to visit Karelia without getting acquainted with “Kalevala”.

International MaslenitsaAs always, the teachers of Russian as a foreign language held the annual Maslenitsa festival for international students to acquaint them with the Russian traditions.

DedafestFor our international students, one of the most impressive cultural events of winter Petrozavodsk was Dedafest.




The national cuisine party
the national cuisine partyThis Thursday , February 13, Petrozavodsk State University invited international students and volunteers to a traditional national cuisine party “Traditional dishes of your country”. The organizers decided to introduce the students to the Russian traditional food and to present traditional meals of the representatives of other countries in order to plunge into the atmosphere of a foreign country and to feel a taste of the different cultures.




A Visit to the Museum of Fine Arts
A Visit to the Museum of Fine ArtsOn the 7th of February, 2014, a personal exhibition of the artist Irina Teremovskaya “My Magical World” was opened at the Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Karelia. Among the first guests at the opening ceremony were the students from Norway and Finland who are studying the Russian language at the Institute of International Programs and the exchange students of the Faculty of Industrial and Civil Engineering of PetrSU.




Winter Students International Training Camp in Competitive Programming in PetrSU
International Collegiate Programming ContestFrom 27.01.2014 to 06.02.2014, the winter trainings of the strongest student teams were held in Petrozavodsk State University in order to prepare for the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest. There were 49 teams (170 participants) taking part in this event from 32 universities of 9 countries: Russia, Belarus, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Poland, Slovakia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The trainings have been held since 1998 twice a year, in winter and summer.




A New Course in English
Timo TokalaThe IT-park of PetrSU hosted a meeting with the representatives of the School of Forest Sciences of the University of Eastern Finland, held by the head of the School, Professor Timo Tokala. During the meeting the participants reached an agreement to start a new intensive course in the English language.
